King Soththisena
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
432 AC - 432 AC

After King Mahanama, the last definite ruler of the first Lambakarna dynasty that began with King Vasabha, there arose an internal conflict within the royal family. King Mahanama had another son named Sotthisena, born to a different consort. The Mahavamsa mentions that his mother was a Tamil woman. She was also a daughter of the king’s consort and was named Sangha. Legally, she should have inherited the throne, but after the death of her father, Sotthisena assumed kingship immediately. However, at this moment, Princess Sangha, who had presented herself assertively, killed him on the day she became queen and handed the kingship over to her husband, Chattagaha.

The Rajarathnakara records Sotthisena’s name as Sengoth Raja. Chronicles mention that during this period, some kings had Dravidian women as consorts. It appears that Abhayanaga Kumara, after recruiting mercenary troops from southern India, acquired this status, though such occurrences were rare. Sotthisena’s reign lasted less than a single day.
