King Haththadata
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
684 AC - 684 AC

After King Danapiti Datta, a person named Hatthadāṭha ascended to the throne. In some chronicles, he is referred to as Hunannaru Riyan Dala. Hunannaru is a village distinguished as Unhanāgāra in the Mahāvaṃsa. Since he was born there, he became widely known by that name. Hatthadāṭha was crowned king by the Tamil official Pottakuttha Senaviya. By this time, it appears that Tamil commanders had become king-makers.

During the period of the aforementioned puppet kings, it cannot be said that the country enjoyed peaceful or favorable conditions. Except for some rituals, no special achievements carried out by them are recorded. One fragment of the Sinhala royal lineage indicates this. The period from King Shilākāla to the reign of Manavamma Kumara is considered a time of political instability. During this era, although several kings were in power, they were subjected to frequent conflicts.

The royal lineages that began with King Shilākāla and those that began with Mahanāga engaged in struggles over state inheritance. As a result, whenever one lineage assumed power, princes of the other lineage rose in opposition. There were even authorities who contracted mercenary armies to fight these power struggles. Because of this situation, development across the island suffered severe setbacks. The public endured oppression, state wealth was plundered, and the country’s economic system collapsed.

This period ended with the arrival of a prince named Manavamma, who ushered in a period of prosperity and good governance. The reign of King Hatthadāṭha lasted six months.
