King Mahinda VI
Kingdom of Polonnaruwa
1187 AC - 1187 AC

The person named Mahinda, who caused King Vijayabahu II to be put to death through Dipani, ascended the throne. Since he was the sixth to appear under this name, he came to be known as Mahinda VI. The Mahavamsa states that he belonged to the Kuling(a) clan. The Pujavaliya, Rajavaliya, and Nikaya Sangrahaya refer to King Mahinda as Kilinga Kesdā Mihindu.

Among the clans that were brought here along with the Bodhi branch by Emperor Dharmashoka, there was also a group known as the Kuling(a). There is no evidence to state that Mahinda was descended from these clans. What is evident here is that he was a person driven by greed for power, lacking a legitimate claim to the throne. Had this not been the case, after King Vijayabahu, the throne should have passed to his sub-king (viceroy), Prince Nissankamalla.

Prince Nissankamalla, who put King Mahinda to death, seized the kingdom. As a result, his reign was limited to five days.
