King Wickramabahu IV
Kingdom of Gampola
1359 AC - 1371 AC

According to inscriptional evidence, King Vikramabahu IV held the position of “Epa” (a deputy ruler) from 1357 onwards.

Thereafter, in 1359, he expelled King Bhuvanekabahu V, who was ruling from Gampola, and seized the throne himself. It is believed that he received assistance from the Arya Chakravartis, who ruled in the north. It is also thought that, in return, he paid taxes or tributes to them.

A powerful minister of the king, Alagakkonara (Alakeshwara), is said to have established the Kotte Kingdom during this period.

There is also a popular tradition that the queen of this king was deified under the name Henakanda Bisso Bandara.

The famous Ambekke Devalaya, renowned in Sri Lanka for its ancient wooden carvings, was also constructed during the reign of this king.
