King Weerabahu II
Kingdom of Gampola
1391 AC - 1397 AC

As mentioned in the section on King Veera Alakeshwara, after expelling his brother Veera Alakeshwara, Prince Veerabahu ascended the throne. He can be identified as King Veerabahu II.

In other sources, this king is described as the brother-in-law of King Bhuvanekabahu V (i.e., the husband of his sister). However, in the Asgiriya palm-leaf manuscript, the name Veerabahu refers to Devamantri or Devamantrishwara, who is described as a brother of King Alakeshwara XI and the second husband of Queen Jayasiri.

This information is recorded only in the Asgiriya manuscript.

In AD 1396, a monastic reform was conducted under the leadership of Sangharaja Jayabahu Devarakkhita Dhammakitti Thera. The Nikaya Sangraha states that during this reform, the king’s son was ordained into the Buddhist monastic order.

Furthermore, it is mentioned that shortly after AD 1396, King Veerabahu went to Kotte in an attempt to capture Veera Alakeshwara. It is also stated that King Veerabahu died in AD 1396, and after his death, his sons Vijaya Epa and Thunaseya governed the kingdom until Veera Alakeshwara returned to power.

These accounts are recorded in the 1961 publication “A Concise History of Ceylon” by C.W. Nicholas and Senarath Paranavithana.
