During the time when Polonnaruwa had fallen under Chola control and the people of Rohana were rising in a struggle for national independence, a prince named Vikramapandya went to the island of Duludupa (possibly an overseas region) and lived there under protection. Although it is not clearly known whose son he was, it is believed that he was the son of King Mahalana Kitti, who was mentioned earlier.

Since during this period the Chola invasions were repeatedly directed against the land of Rohana, and as the safety of the royal princes there was not guaranteed, they appear to have gone into hiding in various regions. Prince Vikramapandya must have been one of them. If, as mentioned earlier, he was the son of King Mahalanakitti, then it must have been his father who sent him abroad for his protection.

However, he later came to know of the situation in the island. Therefore, he returned and ascended to the throne.

The royal center of King Vikramapandya was a region called Kalatittha. There are differing opinions regarding this place — some consider it to be Kalutara, while others identify it as Kalthota. He was able to rule over Rohana for only about one year. A prince named Jagatpala caused his death.
