King Kuda Thissa
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
50 BC - 47 BC

After the death of King Choranāga, the throne was taken by Prince Tissa, a son of King Mahāchūlika Mahātissa. In the Pūjāvaliya and other chronicles, he is referred to as Kuda Tissa (Cula Tissa or “Little Tissa”). He ruled for approximately three years.

According to an inscription found at the Ridi Vihāra, a king named Tissa Mahārāja (King Kuda Tissa) is identified by Professor Senarath Paranavitana as this same ruler. However, no notable works or achievements have been recorded from his reign.

It appears that Queen Anulā, who had been the consort of King Choranāga, later became the queen of King Kuda Tissa as well. It is possible that her affection for Kuda Tissa may have been the reason she administered poison to Choranāga. Later, she is said to have poisoned Kuda Tissa himself.

According to Professor Senarath Paranavitana, Queen Anulā was a corrupt and immoral woman, whose actions brought disgrace upon the entire community of women. After causing the death of Kuda Tissa, Queen Anulā appointed Siva (Siva/Balatha) as king. The Mahāvaṃsa refers to him as the “Pettadovārika”, meaning the gatekeeper or door-warden.

Thus, Siva, who unexpectedly rose from the position of a royal gatekeeper to that of a monarch, ruled the kingdom for four years and two months.
