King Chandra Mukha Siva
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
44 AC - 52 AC

After King Ilanaga, who ruled for six years, his son Prince Chandamukha Siva ascended to the throne. The Mahavamsa describes this king only briefly, in just three verses. His name appears in the Rajavaliya, Pujavaliya, and Rajarathnakaraya as Sandamuhunu and Sandagamunu, among other variations. “Siva” is his actual name, while “Chandamukha” is an epithet. It was likely given to him because he had a gentle or pleasant face. According to the commentary on the Majjhima Nikaya, the epithet “Chandamukha” was also used for a king named Tissa.
